Found this little pocket last Tuesday. No signage, just a faded awning. Walked out with the best flat white I've had this year and a new regular spot.
The thing about Newtown is everyone thinks they know every corner. But behind the station, tucked between a laundromat and a place that sells vintage typewriters, there's a cafe that doesn't even have a proper sign.
Just a hand-painted awning that says "Coffee" in letters that are barely holding on.
The Coffee
Single origin, rotating weekly. This week it was an Ethiopian Yirgacheffe that actually tasted like the tasting notes promised — blueberry, yes, but also this weirdly pleasant lavender thing happening on the finish.
Flat white was $4.50, which is somehow becoming the norm, but at least here it's actually worth it. They use Meadow Lea milk, which I know some people have opinions about, but in a flat white it stretches beautifully.
The Space
Fifty seats, maybe sixty if you count the ones outside. Old timber tables that don't match. Music that's there but not annoying — think Bon Iver at a volume where you can still have a conversation.
The kind of place you can actually sit and work without feeling like you're overstaying. No one's rushing you out. The WiFi's solid, there are actual power outlets (three, I counted), and the afternoon light is chef's kiss.
The Food
Didn't try the food this time, but the menu looked promising. House-made pastries in the cabinet, the usual avocado situations, and something called a "miso mushroom toast" that I'll be back to investigate.
Prices are reasonable for Newtown — $18-22 for brekkie, which is about what you'd expect in 2025.
The Vibe Check
✅ Good for: Working, dates, weekend brekkie, catching up with a friend
❌ Not for: Large groups, quick take-away (they're slow), anyone who needs absolute silence

Worth finding. Don't tell too many people — the queue's already long enough on Saturday mornings.
